Deep Vein Thrombosis

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a condition in which a blood clot (thrombus) forms in one or more of the deep veins in the body. DVT most commonly affects the femoral or popliteal vein of the legs, or the deep veins of the pelvis.

DVT/PE often goes undiagnosed by medical providers. This is a serious, but preventable medical condition.
The danger arises when part of the clot breaks off and travels to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism (PE). PE is a serious condition that can lead to collapse, abnormally low blood pressure, and sudden death.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), studies estimate that 300,000 to 600,000 Americans have DVT/PE each year, and that 60,000 to 100,000 people die as a result.

The risk of developing DVT increases with the following:

  • Major surgery
  • Immobility, such as being in the hospital and long travel
  • Recent injury
  • Increased estrogen, from birth control pills, pregnancy, and certain medications
  • Chronic medical illnesses
  • Previous DVT
  • Age (risk increases as age increases)
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
The CDC reports that approximately half of the people that suffer from DVT have no symptoms. For those who do experience symptoms, swelling, pain, tenderness, and redness of the skin are the most common.

The symptoms of PE include difficulty in breathing, faster than normal heart beat, chest pain or discomfort, coughing up blood, and low blood pressure, lightheadedness, or blacking out.

The CDC recommends that if you experience any of these symptoms, you should seek immediate medical assistance.

Failure to Diagnose Deep Vein Thrombosis

DVT/PE often goes undiagnosed by medical providers. This is a serious, but preventable medical condition. Blood thinners and anticoagulation drugs are often used to treat the condition.

Since 1987, Mr. DiMartini has represented medical malpractice victims throughout the New York City metropolitan area.
It is the doctor’s or hospital’s duty to properly and timely diagnose a treatable medical condition such as DVT, so as to avoid unnecessary complications to the patient.

The failure to diagnose a condition which should have been timely diagnosed, and that failure causes injury to the patient, is medical malpractice. In such a case, the injured patient is entitled to be compensated for his pain and suffering and other damages. Should the patient have died as a result of the delayed diagnosis, the estate may bring a claim for wrongful death.
