A bimalleolar fracture is a fracture of the ankle that involves the lateral malleolus and the medial malleolus.
If the fracture is severe enough and the doctor believes that it will not heal correctly by external fixation, such as casting, the doctor will perform an open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) surgery.
