Texting While Driving

Texting While Driving

According to a survey, 71% of people between the ages of 18 and 49 admit to talking on a cell phone and texting while driving.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that driver inattention was a causative factor in 25-30 percent of all police-reported traffic crashes.

In 2009, almost 5,500 people died and another half a million were injured in crashes involving a distracted driver.  Distraction-related fatalities represented 16 percent of all traffic fatalities in 2009.

Drivers who are texting while driving are 23 times more likely to have a serious crash.

According to the CDC, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens. One-third of all deaths in this age group are motor vehicle related.  In 2009, eight teens ages 16 to 19 died every day from motor vehicle injuries.  Per miles driven, teen drivers are four times more likely than older drivers to crash.  Texting is the number one distraction behind the wheel for teen drivers.

Keep your Eyes on the Road

A car travels approximately 1.4 feet per second for every mile per hour it is traveling.  That means that a car doing at just 40 mph has traveled more than 56 feet in one second.  Look at a text for just two seconds and your eyes were off the road for more than 100 feet.  This is what makes texting while driving so devastating.

Studies have found that texting while driving produces worse reaction times than even drunk driving.  With texting there are no eyes on the road, not even drunk ones.

Drivers who are texting while driving are 23 times more likely to have a serious crash.  Auto accidents caused by driver distracted cause serious injuries and even death.  These are needless and senseless accidents that could have been avoided.  Drivers’ are responsible for the lives of others when they are behind the wheel.  Use common sense and keep your eyes on the road.

“Keep your Eyes on the Road” is dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers posed by drivers who are texting.  Please help spread the word and “like” Keep your Eyes on the Road on FaceBook.
