Vertebrel Compression Fracture

New York City Vertebral Compression Fracture Lawyers

Avertebral compression fracture can be caused by trauma, a weakening of the vertebra seen in patients with oteoporosis, lytic lesions from metastatic tumors or infection. In previously healthy patients, it is most often caused by extreme vertical shock.

Diagnosis

Compression fractures are usually diagnosed on spinal radiographs, where a wedge-shaped vertebra may be visible or there may be loss of height of the vertebra. When the fracture was caused by severe trauma a CT or MRI scan may be performed.

How to Treat Spinal Compression Fractures

A compression fracture may be treated conservatively with pain medications and bracing. If the pain is too severe a more invasive procedures may be undertaken such as a rertebroplasty or a kyphoplasty.

Vertebroplasty is performed by a spine surgeon or interventional radiologist. It is a minimally invasive procedure and patients usually go home the same or next day as the procedure. Patients are given local anesthesia and light sedation.

During the procedure, bone cement is injected with a biopsy needle into the collapsed or fractured vertebra by fluoroscopic x-ray guidance. The cement quickly hardens and forms a support structure within the vertebra that provides stabilization and strength.

Kyphoplasty is an attempt to restore the height and angle of kyphosis of a fractured vertebra, followed by its stabilization using injected bone cement. The procedure typically includes the use of a small balloon that is inflated in the vertebral body to create a void within the cancellous bone prior to cement delivery. Once the void is created, the procedure continues in a similar manner as a vertebroplasty.
