A complete fracture is a bone break that completely disrupts the continuity of a bone across its entire width. This is a serious personal injury.
In contrast, an incomplete fracture is one in which only some bone trabeculae are completely sectioned, while others are twisted or remain intact.
A complete fracture can be transverse (straight across the bone), oblique (at an angle), or spiral (at an angle that is twisted). The fracture can be complicated by swelling. - Oblique: A diagonal break in the bone.
Causes of Complete Fractures
Fractures are commonly caused by a fall, being struck by an object, or by twisting or bending of the bone. A complete fracture may be sustained in accidents such as a car accident, trip and fall, slip and fall, pedestrian knockdown, or a motorcycle accident.
The wrist, ankle, and hip are the most common sites for a fracture. Although, any bone within the body may sustain a fracture.
Immobilization of the bone with a plaster cast is a common treatment for a complete fracture. If the break is more complicated surgical insertion of metal rods or plates to hold the bone pieces together may be necessary.
